Chapter 27

Sawyer

Present

N ot being able to look at Henry and Fin, I stared at the floor while I talked. Some of it was fear for what their faces would portray, and some that I wouldn't be able to get it out if I stopped. Finley had gotten out of her chair and sat by me on the bed halfway through my story. She’d placed her arm around me, hugging me to her as I'd spoken. I didn't even realize that tears were falling from my eyes till she handed me a Kleenex. Henry was the first to talk after I'd finished.

"That night...when you came to me…um…in the treehouse?" He questioned.

I nodded my head as I observed him. "It's why I missed practice. R had stopped by, and then the conversation with my parents took place that evening. I spent the next few hours packing enough things to sustain me, but not enough to be noticed in case R had someone watching our house."

"Why didn't you tell me more? Why didn't you have me call the cops?"

He was hurt that I hadn't confided in him, but I couldn't have told him. I was glad that I hadn't after the wreck, or they'd be dead as well. I knew it.

"I couldn't, Henry. I wanted to. I wanted to so much, but I'd seen my parent's fear when R was in our house. I'd met him and knew he wasn't someone to piss off. I didn't want to put you or Finley in harm's way. It was hard enough to say goodbye, not knowing if I'd see you again, but I had to hope that you'd still be alive out there. I didn't want your death on my conscience Henry. Can't you see that?" I pleaded with him to understand, my eyes imploring him to believe me.

Henry started to open his mouth, a rebuttal on his tongue. I could tell by his face that he wouldn't accept my reasoning. It was Finley, though, that stopped him.

"Enough, Henry. Can't you see how hard this was? For crying out loud, she was fifteen. She'd just been told she was adopted, and a strange man wanted to take her at her birthday in two weeks. What did you expect her to do? When you were fifteen, you thought you'd marry Selena Gomez, and those baggy jeans and a studded belt were the biggest fashion trend. So maybe cut Sawyer some slack. Don't judge her for her decisions. You don't know that you'd have made any different ones. Besides, it's in the past. We're here now. We're together. Let's be happy about that. We have her back. I, for one, am grateful for that." Tears were on the brim of her eyes, but she didn't let them fall.

Henry appeared suitably chastised. I had to give it to Fin. She knew how to put him in his place. Smiling at her, I was grateful that this amazing woman was on my side. Finley was fierce, and I was glad to have her in my life.
